The carrots story was used to explain WWII air fight success rates which were actually due to the new top secret RADAR advances.

I read comics like Baldo for both humor and enlightenment. The insights need not be Earth shattering, just eye opening to new ideas. Thank you to the comic creators. And I like carrots, kale, and spinach, so there!

Kale and spinach, sautéed in a little olive oil…good!

During WWII, England’s RADAR system was still Top Secret. They explained their pilots’ amazing ability to find German planes, even at night, by saying their pilots had great vision because they ate so many carrots. This is one suspected source of the myth.

One advantage of beta-carotene supplements over vitamin A pills is that one is unlikely to OD on the former. Vitamin A is somewhat toxic. People have occasionally been made ill (possibly even poisoned) by eating polar bear liver, which is extremely high in vitamin A. Another name for vitamin A is retinol (or a retinoid mixture), cf., retina.

    Correction: “made” instead of “make”.

One of my daughter’s friends decided to become an uninformed self directed vegetarian. She had no idea what she was doing, so she ate just carrots and the whites of her eyes turned yellow from carrot poisoning. I told her to go to the doctor because she looked like she had liver failure.

Carrots come in many colors. The commonality of orange carrots is due to Netherlanders’ pride.
