Rebellion and individuality are not necessarily connected. To truly be individual – to truly be unique (whether orn or human) – means not caring one way or the other about whether others are similar to yourself. If you change in order to be different, then you are no longer being yourself.
That said, if Marigold really wants to shock her parents, she should insist on being called “Mom”.
