Iran, bordered by Afghanistan to the east, Iraq to the west, is surrounded on both sides by reminders of American aggression.
And it also has its own history with America to cause concern…
George W. Bush labelled Iran part of the Axis of Evil (along with Russia and North Korea, although Trump is now the puppet of Russia and “fell in love” with Kim Jong Un).
The problems of Iran go back to 1953, when Eisenhower was unhappy with terms offered by Iran for the sale of oil (that the U.S. apparently seemed to feel it was entitled to), so overthrew the democratically elected president (Mohammad Mossadegh), who had been a secular progressive, and installed the tyrannical dictator Shah Reza Pahlavi, who would remain in power until overthrown 26 years later by religious extremists in 1979.
These radical, religious extremists would reverse many of the western secular standards (education for women, western dress in offices and at universities, bikinis instead of burqas at beaches on the Caspian Sea to the North or Persian Gulf to the South).
Iran is far larger in size and power than Iraq and Afghanistan combined. George W. Bush promised a quick war of “regime change” in Iraq (called it “Mission Accomplished” at six weeks) and we are still there 18 years later.
While I am hopeful that this confrontation with Iran will not go any further, I have little faith that arragonce will not prevail. After we have wrecked the country, Boloton might refer to the sacking of Iranian museums as “stealing some old pots.” as did Rumsfeld.
Enact a law requiring 18 months of compulsory public service for all high school grads that includes military for some and other public service for the rest. It is a whole lot harder to send your neighbors middle and upper class children to war than a professional army. An additional benefit will be that young people from all walks of life and regions of the the country would have to meet, live with and get to know each other – increasing the chances for political compromises somewhere in the future.

Trump deliberately got out of the Iran accord so he could start up a war. Or was he just stupid?

Interesting isn’t it. You could easily replace the description of Islamic Extremists with Republican Politician and not many would notice.

I really don’t see how we can continue to delude ourselves that we’re a peace-loving nation.

The rest of the world spells it differently. The USA is a piece-loving nation. Americans want a piece of everyone else’s pie.
