Lottie’s reticence to hear that is probably on more than just the obvious level. In Scary Go Round, a mysterious child (initially just called “The Child”, later named “Poh”) came to Tackleford proclaiming “Things are going to change”. After causing some rioting and looting, he disappeared when MI-6 tried to kill him and Shelley in an air strike. (Shelley survived unharmed, possibly because she was wearing Ryan’s lucky pants, but explaining that would be kinda gross.) No one saw what happened to Poh, but he and his caretaker (who looked and acted suspiciously like a certain King of Pop) left town, their work done.
Which brings us to the final SGR chapter, “Goodbye”. Poh showed up at St. Mary’s RC Primary School, where Lottie and Shauna were students, again proclaiming “Things are going to change”. (He said that fairly often.) After accidentally causing Poh to break his arm, Lottie and Shauna were blackmailed into hanging out with him. Poh held a costume party, where the girls saw Poh was also blackmailing Jack, Linton, and Sonny (they all first appeared in “Goodbye”), but it was actually a ruse; the Mystery Boys suspected Poh and his caretaker of being responsible for the disappearances of several postmen (which they were). And thus the rivalry between Mystery Boys and Mystery Girls began.
So Lottie would probably have an aversion to the phrase “Things are going to change”, as it would remind her of Poh and that unpleasantness, beyond her not liking the idea of Ryan not being around next year.
At the end of “Goodbye”, Shelley moves to London to work for the Ministry of History (she hadn’t sent in her CV yet, though…), leaving her roommates Ryan, Amy, Desmond, and Comrade Bat behind. As they watched Shelley leave, Ryan asked “So what happens now?” and Amy replied “Well, I suppose… things are going to change.” And that was the final line of dialogue in SGR, as Bad Machinery started right after.

A rare exemplar of teacher loved and respected by the students go away. Probably he’s the last of his kind and will soon become extinct.

It’s never a good omen when the words “things are going to change” appear in that order.
