*this is a very RESPONSIBLE toon. Truth is always the first victim in any conflict……and the “news” since the Saturday morning shooting has not been treated in a responsible manner by the MSM news……publishing and promoting every smear and slander against an innocent Rightwing Majority of Americans, who are trying to speak truth to power and public, and who have fact and evidence to back up the accurate words they report about the bad deeds of the Leftwing activists and elected officials.

    Way to Go, Lisa!

Could also label it “responsible law enforcement statements”, but that would look like a threat on the sheriff’s life, because now I guess you can’t use striking metaphors without being accused of fomenting violence….

Actually, I hope the left continues the blame game on this issue. Blaming Bush for everything drove independents away from the liberal media and to Fox News just so they could get a dose of Fair and Balanced. With the disgusting “journalistic” bias tactics being displayed during this incident, even more thinking people are going to smell the b/s and migrate away from the NY Times and the alphabet networks.

The shooter is a very hateful person, and next in the hate line are people like C.A. Brobst who wish to take advantage of the murder of innocents to unfairly hurt people that they disagree with. As Rahm Emanuel said, “Never let a crisis go to waste”, and the bottom-feeding opportunists are doing their best. However, they’re shooting themselves in the foot by demonstrating to the world just how similar to the shooter they are with their small-minded and hateful comments.

Keep it up, fellows. You’re proving our points, not yours.

Responsible Journalism died about when Fox News decided to become the GOP’s mouthpiece.

Buried when Glenn Beck became its star.

What happened in Arizona is not an isolated incident.

@JPTewel Well, certainly not in yours. I would find it difficult to navigate in any universe with my head stuck in the sand.

Face it, friend. The growth of Fox isn’t due to hardcore conservatives watching it, as there aren’t enough of them, but as a result of thoughtful Independents and Liberals tuning in to hear what isn’t being reported elsewhere. “All the News That We See Fit to Print” doesn’t cut it today, except perhaps for some folks such as yourself.

I also watch MSNBC on occasion, and scan the alphabets now and then. I form my opinions as a result of all of it, not just selected tidbits that validate my ego and don’t hurt my feelings. Isn’t that what “Fair and Balanced” is all about?

“tuning in to hear what isn’t being reported elsewhere”

“fact free zone.” Other news organizations tend to post corrections when they’re wrong. I am still waiting for Fox News to post a correction to that ACORN story they ran with.

This isn’t about Fox News (or whatever your permutation is of its name). This is about the fact that the sherrif and the MSM took up arms against the right-side of the aisle over this tragedy. This is an instance that the MSM has a specific agenda that is pro-liberal/anti-conservative, especially since both sides of the aisle use weapon-based narratives in their speeches (Obama used “If they bring a knife to a fight, we’ll bring a gun” or some such).

Where was this yelling and screaming when a guy was reported as saying “Alluha Akbar!” as he was shooting people? No, it had to be “reserved judgement” and “deranged individual.” But now that it’s an opportunity to attack the conservatives in this country who “breed hatred,” the “reserved judgement” is nowhere to be found.

That is why there is so much heat over this issue, and why so many conservatives are “up in arms” over the issue.

Jade… the reason why they didn’t issue a correction on the ACORN thing is that video doesn’t lie when it’s unedited.

Furthermore, the more evidence that came out and the more insiders that squealed, the more guilty Acorn became. But maybe, OJ, the glove doesn’t fit.

Anyway, if media outlets nowadays ACTUALLY issued corrections, then we would never actually get any news. Entire networks would be shut down (MSNBC as an example) and no one would watch the news any more. At this point it’s 90% editorials (opinion) and 10% news on the vast majority of networks (network and cable… including FoxNews).

When, Jade, I see ABC, NBC and their cable affiliates actually issue corrections… then I’ll expect Fox to do the same. But if the only gauge of what is true is public opinion or the politic in power, all we can do is rely on common sense and wisdom as most all the information we will be fed will be biased, tainted, slanted, edited, etc., for the favor of the network telling it.

But since it’s nearly all opinion anyway, no corrections have to be made (that’s only for actual news as fact).

^ When it’s unedited (and they never mentioned the video they championed was heeeeavily edited) it shows (and the investigation that followed) that ACORN was found innocent in that regard. The attempt to sell girls across the borders was immediately reported to the police. Read the judge’s report.

So yes, they need to run a correction. But they already accomplished their goal. Facts be damned.

^^ Like I said Jade, news as fact vs opinion. I gave up on the Acorn thing when they changed their name to maintain gov’t funding and action purpose and avoid public outcry/scrutiny. That’s when the story stopped (not like I ever cared). I didn’t see any of the media really do anything at that point and I saw little refutation of those on Fox’s payroll with the accusations. It’s like they just all let the issue die while other more scintillating ratings pieces appeared.

My question would be a little more immediate. Would any of those media dons claiming that Palin was to blame or the political/media right or left was to blame retract or make corrections? I haven’t seen it (hope they do).

However, I did hear one reasonable person on CNN and on Fox question the facts vs opinion of the sheriff and not put blame on either political sphere. Those individuals gain credibility.

The media immediately set about making this home-grown “suicide bomber”– CRAZY! HIs target made it fairly clear he was an “anti-government nut”- as did his rambling rants, shunted away from view (by the “government” as well as the hosting media) to protect his “right” to a fair trial at some point. First the picture of a long-haired “hippie-junkie”, then a “clean cut kid”, then a shaved head and wide-eyed sociopath. Images are worth a thousand words, and the media know it.

Interesting how any mass killing for a certain “Middle Eastern” religion is immediately proclaimed blood on the hands of that religion, but if home-grown, then the media sources for that hatred are using gallons of hand sanitizer.

No, the press is not a victim here, but equally a perp, having shot their responsible real journalists a long time ago.

^^ I don’t agree with you. Now the left wing media might USE this to their advantage, but they didn’t create it nor insight it, etc. It would be equally as wrong for your to make such a statement as it is of the media to blame Palin, the right, etc.

As far as dtroutma ^^^ He had a gun, not a bomb. And the media is not to blame (either politic), it’s this own nutcase’s individual fault. He was a loon and acted in lunacy. Try focusing on reality instead of spin.

@dtroutma, when Muslims around the world were shown dancing with glee after 911, and statements are made taking proud responsibilities after beheadings and mass murders of civilians in the name of Allah (which still happens today), then a fair case can be made as to where the blood resides. How many people on the right are expressing satisfaction after this tragedy?

We’re ALL horrified. President Obama had it right the other day when he said that this is an opportunity for all Americans to come together. Why use the blood of an innocent 9-year old girl to spin political talking points? Such points illustrate the darkness of the person making them much more than it does the persons targeted.

@ DJGuardian, well said. Andrew Jackson was the first president who was injured in an assassination attempt… did he blame the Washington Post?

Food for thought… the following song was found on the shooter’s computer.

Let the Bodies Hit The Floor Drowning Pool

Let the bodies hit the floor Let the bodies hit the floor Let the bodies hit the floor

Let the bodies hit the floor Let the bodies hit the floor Let the bodies hit the floor

Skin to skin, blood and bone You’re all by yourself but you’re not alone You wanted in and now you’re here Driven by hate, consumed by fear

Let the bodies hit the floor Let the bodies hit the floor Let the bodies hit the floor Let the bodies hit the floor

One, nothing wrong with me Two, nothing wrong with me Three, nothing wrong with me Four, nothing wrong with me

One, something’s got to give Two, something’s got to give Three, something’s got to give Now!

Let the bodies hit the floor Let the bodies hit the floor Let the bodies hit the floor

Let the bodies hit the floor Let the bodies hit the floor Let the bodies hit the floor

Should we blame the band for shooting those people? Morons might, just as they would blame Sarah Palin or Rush Limbaugh.

actually, lisa has a point here. You would think that after Dan Rather mistakenly reported that James Brady was dead, journalist anchors would never make that mistake. Was it Peter Jennings who once spoke to his producer, on air, saying he wouldn’t report what he was told (or handed) unless it had been confirmed by two official sources.

Yet, at one point, both Fox and CNN reported that Giffords was dead. This newer generation of cable television journalists/anchors don’t seem to even understand the definition of reporting news … if they hear it, from anybody, they report it, no fact checking, no confirmation. Most the anchors/reporters/commentators never even cite their source anymore, never bothering reporting where the information came from.

    It’s very, very sad.

On the other hand, the MSM is trying to report responsibly but it is difficult when there are so many sources of information, much of which is based on questionable veracity for the sake of a good story.

Fox News, talk-radio, the social media, and news blogs are not the victims, nor are they the innocents. You don’t have to listen too long to the various outlets, to realize far too much is highly partisan, lies, distortions, and stuff taken out of context to make a partisan point. MSNBC attempts to balance the political discourse, and occasionally they step over the line, but nowhere near as extreme.

There is plenty of blame to go around, but the Right media outlets should not spend so much time playing the victim card, nor being so self-righteous.

believecommonsense, you make a good point, but with so many news outlets out there today, chaos builds very quickly. When Fox reported she was dead, they cited ABC News as their source. ABC News cited NPR as THEIR source. I don’t know where NPR got their info from

The “good old days” of reporting seems better than it was in hindsight because the sytstem allowed for hours, sometimes days, to get the story details verified. Today, there’s about 45 seconds. The media climate is so competitive that journalists believe that because they CAN report instantly, they MUST report instantly. To be fair, this is consumer driven - a network that says “We don’t know exactly what happened, but we’ll tell you when we do” will be quickly switched to a network who claims to be reporting the latest information.

Canbag, also a good point. Whenever the right is criticized, they’re eager to make that their lead story, often out of proportion. However, whenever the left is criticized, their media pretends that the issue never happened at all. Which is better?

Wraithkin: This is about the fact that the sherrif and the MSM took up arms against the right-side of the aisle over this tragedy.

That’s an odd description of what occurred. Both CNN and Fox covered the sheriff’s remarks as the news that it was. I watched CNN and Fox that first day, and at first their coverage was almost identical. Saw the same clips of Giffords previous interviews on both channels. The sheriff was a newsmaker, and the news channels covered it the same way. Both CNN and Fox had commentators that agreed with or disagreed with the sheriff.

You cannot blame the media, any of it, for covering the sheriff’s remarks.

@Nemesys: believecommonsense, you make a good point, but with so many news outlets out there today, chaos builds very quickly.

That’s not a valid reason for reporting things that have not been confirmed. I don’t know where either CNN or Fox got its information that she was dead, but it was wrong and they shouldn’t have reported it. (She was reported awake and responding when she arrived at the ER.)

This propensity to report anything that they’ve “heard” is the media’s own doing. In fact, since they’re on 24/7, there should be LESS pressure to report it without confirmation, not more.

I agree with your statement that the media creates the “MUST” report immediately simply because they “CAN” report immediately. I think some cable news reporters and anchors should be required to attend a good journalism class or two, and I think some of them have no journalism education. It’s too bad.
