Rain is longed for urgently here, it is a very dry year, our lakes and some streams are without water!

This strip should be required reading for all teachers. …. Don’t misunderstand: I am not discounting the value of the subjects they teach, but there are a LOT of important questions that are never answered in school, nor is the attempt to explore those topics ever made.

I didn’t realize he lives in the country, I always thought he lived in town.

One of the “deepest” Calvin strips ever. I’m decades older than Calvin and college educated. The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don’t know.

I hated those rainy mornings. I never wanted to get out of bed.

worse yet—there are certain subjects which either totally taught incorrectly,cannot be taught, are ignored completely or are banned from being covered!!!

Calvin, you have to at least finish high school, before you can get your blasters license and learn to blow stuff up!! Of course the penalty for taking short cuts can be severe so you might want to pay close attention.

Schools are not there to educate you. They are there to teach you how to sit down, shut up and follow directions. Do you think the powers that be really want a nation of critical thinkers?

Bill Watterson sure knew how to draw a rainy day.

The “important stuff” that isn’t taught in school is often of such a controversial nature that a consensus would never be reached. Let the parents teach that stuff if they choose.

I guess it’s the songwriter in me, but the text of this strip reads like lyrics. I could build a song around it.

Become an autodidact. Learn on your own what you want to learn. Didn’t do so well in school.

School is hard for a genius like Calvin.

Two university degrees dated 1990 and 1991. I have not had to graph one damn equation, all the math I use does not involve letters other than X and Y, and no one has asked to see my painstakingly thorough research papers on the the Battle of Manassas Bridge, on the effects of Ritalin on the prefrontal cortex, on managing behavior of children with autistic disorder, or the challenge of churches in the modern era.

Yeah, 3/4 of what I had to study to get those framed pieces of paper was a total waste of time and money. No argument will be successful if you come from the “expanded your learning opportunity, taught you how to learn, or opened your mind” as plenty of other experiences in life would have accomplished those goals.
