One of my favorite Monty Python skits: “Burglar!” “No, no, you’re just trying to sell me a set of encyclopedias!” “I assure you, madam, I just want to rob the place.” “Oh, well, in that case, come in!” “Mind you, I don’t think you’ve ever really given proper thought to what a fine set of ecyclopedias can do for you!”
Technically they were neither. Taking something from a cookie jar would be theft. And I have no idea what the passive voice of that is (“Thieved from”?)
Burglary is the illegal entry of a building with intent to commit a crime such as theft or assault. Not a cookie jar.
Robbery is, roughly, taking something from a person with violence or the threat of it (so you can’t, say, “rob a bank”, if there’s no-one there at the time to threaten). I presume there was no-one in the jar guarding the cookies.
