Years ago (though, dang, it seems like yesterday), I wrote a book trying to explain triathlon and spent a few pages on what a marvelous number three is. And what a fragile number. A three-legged stool will not wobble no matter what surface you put it on. Add a leg, it’s susceptible to wobble. Remove a leg, it’s not stable at all. I had all sorts of examples like that, but I don’t think I ever mentioned the whole ear-nose-throat triumvirate. But it would have been a great example. When it works, it works. But just one leg of that triangle goes bad, and not only do the other two go bad, but you’re just flat-out miserable.
And adding an extra, say, nose wouldn’t stabilize things a bit, and it would look funny.
Great. Now I’ve scared enough to wear earplugs to swim practice this morning.
