A leak isn’t always from just above, I got the boot from an apartment because the land lady (who lived under me) blamed me for the water stain on her dining room ceiling. Several months later I saw her husband at the store and asked him if they ever tracked down the cause of the leak and with an embarressed look he told me that after I left they found out that the leak was from the rusted flashing around the chimney. The water had leaked in and traveled down a joist until it came to a joint right above the dining room.
