Yeah Elvis, nothing like having “to go” and discovering the bathroom is “out of order.”

Of course in my house there are two “facilities” so the kitties are never left standing with their reading material and bouncing from foot to foot.

Well that doesn’t look like the appropriate mask for odour control Puck. I always use unscented cleaners when washing the boxes, I’m fragrance sensitive too.

And why are bathrooms always closed for cleaning when you need them the most? Love how Elvis has brought reading material with him :)

Puck’s little face mask is adorable! But then we established yesterday that he’s adorable so of course his mask would be too.

Love Puck with his mask (don’t blame him!) and the Man managing without. And, Elvis, you’ve got a newspaper. Take out the classifieds if you need to!When I clean the boxes, it’s two at a time. We have five of ‘em (holdover from four cats and fear of another "Well, I don’t CARE if there isn’t a box there, I think it’s a great place to go potty!" 0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000situation), so our kitties have options. Can’t imagine the talking to I’d get from the cats if I removed ALL of the boxes for scrubbing!

Someone once shut the door between the main part of the house and the laundry room (where Yang’s litter box was kept) as we went away for a day. Poor guy held it in as long as he could, then when he could wait no longer, he found the easiest place in the whole house to clean up after: the bathtub. (Let’s hear you dog people improve on that!)

too bad there’s no way to tell them things like “i’m getting ready to clean the litter box. do your business now.” also, when they get scooped up to go in the carrier without warning, so they could go first (though they’d probably run if they had warning).

I wonder if there is a whole separate news team putting out the Los Gatos (Scratching) Post newspaper that Elvis subscribes to…

Didn’t see your info till today, but I give my sympathy. And, as I always say, after a while, go down to the RSPCA or local equivalent. The best tribute you can pay to a cat you have lost is to offer a good home to another one who needs it.

Even if Jasper had just used the litter box right before I cleaned it, he would still jump right back in and use it again as soon as I was done scooping.

How can the Man smile while he’s cleaning out the litter box?! I don’t think I ever cracked a smile cleaning out the litter box. lol! And poor Elvis in the last panel . . he’s got his rolled up newspaper and everything, ready to spend some quality time in the litter box. But Elvis, I thought you didn’t poop! ;p http://www.breakingcatnews.com/comic/the-woman-is-reporting-in-the-nursery/

The reason cats watch impatiently while their litter box is being cleaned has nothing to do with actually needing to use the facility. It has to do with needing to establish ownership of the litter box again since all their scents were washed away.

How many times have I cleaned the box, only to have a (usually male) cat jump straight in and squat down to use it immediately afterwards.

^^ Yep, Elvis is just waiting to be first in line to use it. It doesn’t matter if there were twenty other boxes to use elsewhere.

Because we live in a rural area, our cat can go outside as well. This time of year – not as much, but he does like a stroll now and then. If his litterbox is out of order, he goes out and enjoys the scenery and make sures his territory is marked. :D

There are three to choose from in our house, but one of my guys always needs the one that I’m working on. If I move to another, then he decides to use that one.

With that many cats I’m surprised they only share one litter box. I have 2 cats and have 2 boxes. When one is being cleaned the other is “open for business” so they never have to wait. ;)

I was told that you should have one more litter box than you have cats.

The day after our 20-plus year old cat died, a pregnant stray cat appeared at the window. (How do they know?) Not one to waste cat food, my mother fed the cat; you can guess what happened next. Long after her four kittens were adopted, our now-neutered and “chipped”, old Rambling Rose maintained a habit of meowing at the door to be let out to supervise birds in our yard. Then she’d meow to be let back in to use the litter box. Rose’s attitude: “I’m not any old stray cat. I have my very own ‘inside’ litter box” sure annoyed my Mom!

I have always been tempted to hang some newspaper around the wall of the litter box.

My Hemingway gets in and “christens” the box as soon as I get the fresh litter in it. Even if he used the box right before I clean it. Usually before I can even get the cover back on it (so he squats there nd gives me the “Uh, excuse me, a little potty privacy please!” look.

I recently read a tweet from Georgia to the effect that she was avoiding litter box jokes because they were too “easy.” Hmmm. Not sure how to finish this comment….

Having 4 cats and a large dog cleaning cat boxes is a daily chore. The cats will jump in the second the box is clean of course, so I clean then wait and do a second round of cleaning. It did take me a while to figure out why none of my cats pooped though once I moved into the new house. It smelled like poop but there wasn’t any poop. That was until the dog showed up to greet me with clumping cat litter stuck ear to ear on his lips and dried on his nose. Apparently he drank his water dish dry before he got in the boxes and couldn’t wash away the evidence. No more kisses for him and I had to move the openings for the cat boxes so he wasn’t able to got into them. Bad dog.

Every time one is used when possible. And if you can, have n+1 litter boxes where n = number of cats.
