While the more primitive societies ignore the effects of pollution, are too lazy to work on a solution to an obvious problem, or afraid of offending wealthy corporations.

Awwww. Couldn’t you have given the poor thing a blindfold? Like our country has about clean energy cars?

No, it’s not all that simple and Dr. Merkel is not all that decisive. There will be older diesels crushed (encouraged with incentives to buy new cars) and the German government is taking the situation seriously – as much as it can before the up-coming election. But the ball didn’t start rolling until the Obama administration’s Justice Department went after VW for gaming the system. Also remember that the coalition government of CDU/CSU with the FDP (“Liberal Democrats” oddly the most pro-business party in Germany) was on it’s way to delaying the withdrawal from Nuclear power plants when Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster happened. Only then did Merkel reversed course (back to about what the Social Democrats and Green Party had started around 2000) and is now doing the right thing. Of course in comparison to American Republicans, this German conservative is a gem. We don’t even need to bring up Trump.

In Germany, if your car doesn’t look nice, it gets towed and crushed. After a big hailstorm, any car that was outside was essentially totaled because they all looked like someone had hit them with hammers. Antique cars have to look nice, so there aren’t as many as you might expect

Diesel cars were introduced during the first oil embargo in the 70’s because the fuel was cheaper and easier to store and transport than gasoline and the mileage was somewhat better. should have been phased out a long time ago.
