A certain percentage of jokes in this particular strip (higher than average, I’m sure) require a nerd-pedigree. In the past, several went over my head… I got lucky this time out.

    OK, I googled “Coraline” … from Futabaken’s tip…

cos I’d never heard of it either.

And as Alien says, she gets into a parallel world….

If you don’t want too much explanation…..

skip the rest of my comment…..

Or if you want help… or it might just be my take, read on!

Actually she goes through a door, and finds an apartment occupied by people who more or less resemble the ones she knows in her familiar world.

At first better things seem to happen there…

but to stay, you need to accept shiny buttons being sewn over your eyes….. eeek….

So my takeaway is that Jay is only getting a promotion and a raise cos he walked through such a door.

Heaven knows that the Rita in our world wouldn’t give him those things.

This was because Neil Gaiman said hi to our message board. But people should check out Coraline.

I’ve seen Coraline – but I like Neil Gaiman’s “The Graveyard Book” much better. By the way, Gaiman is teaching at a little college just up the road from our home in New York state.

the movie is great and the other movies from ‘Laika’ are also great (Paranorman is one of my favorites). And if you like that style, you may also like ‘Dragon hunters’

    I don’t know. I think Jay’s a red pill sort of guy.

He collaborated with Sir Terry Pratchett on one of my favorite books, Good Omens: the Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch.

Going over this cartoon, thinking about it, I thought of that little girl in ’Maria’s Day’ who has such big blue eyes that I wonder if she has cataracts.
