So many highschool/college boys who worked as stockboy/baggers in those days. They didn’t hire girls for the job where I lived; women were checkers, but in spite being the ones who bought and carried most of the groceries home, they weren’t considered up to the job of packing them!
I can still remember the Lady at our local store yelling “Packer Please” into the intercom with her mouth too close to the microphone so it came out distorted . When I was a little kid I thought she was yelling “Cracker Please.”
Fast forward 10 years to 1987 and as a 16 year old I had to respond to that sound by going up front to pack someone’s groceries.
When we go grocery shopping my husband does the bagging. The way he does it saves on bags AND unloading time for us. Since we go to the same store every week they know us. One time there was a new bagger. The manager actually came up, said “hi” to us, and told the bagger to just “enjoy the break”. Oh, and yes; we bring our own bags.
As a car-less pedestrian, I always have to repack (No point in trying to get the bagger to do it right) and consolidate the many bags into two (I only have two arms).
To go the distance, looping the handles over the back of the wrists is more comfortable than gripping them in curled fingers as I see most people use.
These comments remind me why Wegman’s is the best. No self-checkouts (although I don’t mind them in other stores), courteous cashiers who know how to pack and assistance loading your purchases for those who need it. They also pay a reasonable wage and provide benefits for their employees. Not to mention clean, large, well-stocked stores with excellent merchandise at decent prices. It amazes me that nobody’s really been able to copy them; some have tried but it’s not even close.

I used to notice that teens can start out as baggers, grow up and have a career, then retire and become baggers again.
