Well, even the Beatles started life as a cover band, until they came to the realization that everywhere they played (in the early days, of course), they’d be changing their sets until right before going on because bands earlier in the gig were playing the same songs they wanted to use, unless they started writing their own stuff. The rest, as they say, is history.
