That would be doing what most voters want, which does not align with either political ideology, so, we will probably not see that until the voters discard these political parties and support candidates that want to see America thrive. I’m afraid the 115th Congress is too engaged in helping the wealthy, working on their re-elections, and perpetuating a pseudo-civil war with the “others” to do Americans any good.
Universal Health Care, Medicare for all, seems like everyone can figure out what to do except the Republicans. We elected some seriously deficient people.
Chancellor Bismark, a right winger, united the Nation of Germany in 1871. He initiated the world’s first universal health care system in 1883. He believed that the plan would promote unity and loyalty to the homeland and that a healthy nation made for a stronger military and more productive factories. The German plan is a mandatory insurance plan with premiums paid jointly by the State, the employer, and the individual. The Germans like their healthcare system as witness by it having survived massive social upheavals.
Noah, your healthcare assessment makes no sense unless you want to see people dying in the streets. First, we have a federal law (passed by republicans, signed by Saint Ronnie Reagan) that says you cannot refuse admission to the ER if someone cannot pay for the service. Prior to the PPACA, that was our “national healthcare policy.” Yes, it’s a stupid way to design public policy, but there it is.
The problems with your comment are several fold. Of course you want people to take care of themselves as the prime directive. But you cannot limit their poor decision making without much more serious invasions of personal liberty. That should be obvious to all the anti-government types like you seem to be. I don’t eat a lot of sugar, for example, which is implicated in all sorts of health maladies. But do you outlaw sugary drinks and all fruit juice as a consequence? Even the evidence-free right wing fools can understand that. Try to tax sugary drinks, for example, and you’ll see the outrage from the right wing nut cases. But sugary drinks are part of what cost ME money in caring for diabetics and people with metabolic syndrome.
So what can you do when people make unhealthy choices? The answer in a civilized society is that you try to educate them and take care of them. And, short of placing restrictions on diet, enforcing exercise and early bedtimes, what the hell are you going to do?
We are all in this together. We all have common responsibility to take care of each other. I’m sorry you are so lacking in civilized inclination, but I am not. I want EVERYONE to pay, and EVERYONE to be covered financially. I, for one, am unwilling to be stupidly selfish about this. And I am healthy, wealthy, and maybe even a little wise.
Let’s start with cancelling the “repeal” and work on some fixes that could be implemented easily. Then work towards universal healthcare / single payer. Take power away from insurance companies and big pharma.
IDAHOSER, every other developed country does a better job with healthcare by having the government support it. Healthcare should NOT be for profit since there is little profit for rare diseases, long term care or preventive medicine. Republicans want to starve the government support for people and then say it doesn’t work. Take money away from the bloated military and start taxing the 1%.

Repeal, then let people pay for their own health care. It’s not the government’s job to provide health care.

Square 1 – Repeal ACA
Square 2 – Replace with Something
Square 3 – PROFIT!!
