Oh, heck! I can remember when baseball players were paid so little they went on strike. I was young (maybe 10) so I don’t remember the salaries involved, but my parents were four-square behind the players. I doubt seriously that anybody would claim they poor players were starving today.
There are minor league players who don’t make all that much money, but they are still considered pros. What we see on tv is the cream of the crop in the major league.

Just perusing a sporting goods web site: a fielder’s mitt goes for an average of $189. Back in the 60s, my mitt cost $3. Still have it. An MLB ball costs $13. In the sixties, $2. A bat could range from $2-$6 depending on the model. If you cracked it, you got a hammer, a nail, and electrical tape to put it back into play. Aluminium bats start at $20, a maple Louisville Slugger goes for $150. Little wonder that you don’t see kids playing sandlot ball anymore. You can get a rubber basketball for ten bucks, and play in any alley, school yard or park that that has serviceable hoops.
“You. Yes, you!!! The one picking your nose! Go stand in the outfield and don’t do anything but wait for that ball, got it?
An hour later: "Why the hell did you miss that ball?!? You had one job, dumbass!!!
I suppose I’ll never like baseball for the same reason I’ll never be a great security guard or sign holder. I don’t like to stand around watching other people have fun.

I doubt it’ll catch on with the younger ones. Too hard to hold a bat and text at the same time.

The manhole cover was home base. One of the girls hit a hard foul ball that broke the plate glass window in the neighbors living room.

I (vaguely) remember when pro players actually lived in the city they played for.
