    OK, finally I get it.

This one is practically a test… and I almost failed.

As a teacher, when faced with senseless – and generally conflicting – policies, I found that the ‘inventive approach’ often realized the intent in a different way than stipulated, but still satisfied the bureaucratic mind. That is, as long as they were not present during the application.

At the 18 story office building where I used to work, they would announce the time of the fire drill a couple of days in advance. You were supposed to walk down the stairs of course to evacuate. Didn’t bother me but half the staff left 5 minutes before the drill was to start.

School staff have to go out with the fire drill as well, what fool would schedule it for February!? Our were always in by October, maybe with a repeat in April.

We had a fire alarm go off in my office building. We were on the third floor of a 3 story building. As I made sure everyone did not linger or ignore the bell, I noticed one woman getting on the elevtor to exit. I told her she could not, to go down the stairs. I was quickly and curtly informed I couldn’t tell her what to do and she mashed the button. On the way down, the elevator chose that moment to breakdown and freeze. (devine intervention? karma?) Luckily, it was a false alarm (not a drill) but she was squalling and blubbering to get her out. I would do nothing to help get her out (like call the fire department) I mean, they were on their way anyhow. She went to her manager and complained that I was being mean and how rude I was, yadda, yadda, yadda. When he found out that she ignored me on not taking the elevator he wrote her up. She said it was my fault and never spoke to me again. Gee, I loved the silence.

If they’re all bundled up for 40 inside, they’re still going to freeze when they have to go outside for the fire drill.

I remember a trick we used in high school where we put a wet paper towel over the thermostat. The evaporation cooled the sensor, causing the heater in the room to kick in.

Hah! This was great! Frazz wanted the students to be ready for the cold when the drill happened.
