Most people are really decent and we do truly have a lot in common with each other if you take the time to communicate. On the other hand, American politicians seem to believe that only rancor, division and opposition can work to get elected to office … and it has to be their exclusive way once elected. It’s turned out to be a self-fulfilling prophecy as most Americans are now disgusted with the candidates … election turnouts are declining (under 60%) and Congressional approval is either in the low teens or single digits.

    .

I’m staying here because most of the problem will take care of itself when enough of the older generations die. The younger generations are more diverse and have had to deal with much more complex issues making them more realistic than the older generation that was shielded from having to make the hard decisions by more equitable conditions.

Been where? Canadian football is more fun to watch than US four yards and a pile of dirt [pre-Astroturf] interrupted by an occasional long pass. I learned more French in a part of the country where French was the seventh most common first language from just reading labels, than in three years of university French. I even got to see Wild Strawberries in the original Swedish with French subtitles. A most educational six years if one is not a bigot.

It doesn’t surprise me since all my cousins hereabouts were raised in the Republican religion where the Democrats are considered to be horned, cloven-hoofed and tailed. Somewhere along the line I realised that they were just folks with a different idea. Of course this county was run by a political boss and that kept everyone in line. He died about the time I graduated high school and when I turned 21 I registered as a Democrat because Independents get no say in the primaries. Then too, my sense of personal integrity forbids me to consider registering as an R. To me, a despot is a despot, no matter how benign. I’d feel the same were I raised under a Democrat despot.
