I know that if, for a real change, the Democrats and Republican worked together and actually listened to “we the people” instead of corporations, the middle class would be better off. Automation has permanently replaced many good paying skilled jobs and will continue to do so. Outsourcing has replaced both unskilled and high tech jobs. We no longer have a knowledgeable work force to do those jobs. We do have a skills gap between the job seekers and employers requirements. Technology has changed the way we do things and automation has brought cost reductions in terms of reduced labor requirements. The number of human workers required in manufacturing is continually declining while at the same time productivity is rising.

    .

Other countries – (e.g.) Foxconn in China – are facing similar problems as jobs are being automated out of existence. If we want to continue on the capitalist trajectory we have to have a government that works together using the very best balance of progressive and conservative ideas. I don’t think the American worker would be willing to work for the wage reductions necessary to make manual labor competitive with automation. Once a job has been automated it is hard to economically justify doing it manually. If the two parties communicated and cooperated we could solve the problem in half the time.

And the cost per ‘saved’ job in tax relief was how much? Just moved the cost to the taxpayers – that is except Trump who pays no taxes.

There is plenty wrong with how the unemployment rate is figured out, but one thing for sure is that the there are more people employed now and the economy is doing a lot better than when George W Bush handed it to Obama.

    .

Does this mean that the unemployment rate is some sort of “big lie” or “hoax,” charges that seem to be coming up ever more frequently? Well, if the unemployment rate is a hoax, it’s quite the long-running one. Yes, there have been modest shifts through the decades in how unemployment is defined, the last ones in 1994. But if the rate seems less useful now than it once was, that probably has far more to do with changes in the economy and society than with anything the economic statistics-gatherers have done.

    .

One of central questions in measuring unemployment has been how to divide those who would work if work were available from those who shouldn’t be considered part of the labor force. One can just ignore the question, and look instead to the employment-to-population ratio — a statistic that seems to be getting more attention lately (in my columns, at least). But policy-makers and number-crunchers have for various reasons always wanted a metric that excluded those who couldn’t or wouldn’t work.

He didn’t save any jobs – the state did by offering tax incentives. And 1000 jobs went to Mexico. So half the workers at Carrier are going to be laid off. Great save. /s

ChevJames . . . The real unployment rate has been cut in half, just like the unemployment rate.

You cannont compare one to statistic to another to create a bogus point.

Oh, I guess you can if you’re intentionally ignorant

Trump is inheriting an economy that is in much better shape than the one Obama inherited, at least by the measure of unemployment numbers & stock prices. Anyone want to try & prove otherwise?

Seven milion to United Technologies to keep 1,000 jobs in Indiana, while STILL shipping 1,300 to Mexico. Bad ratio of cost benefit, and wrong direction keeps going if Trump gets his way with Pence in the wings.

Nothing like a comments section to draw out all the self-styled economic (or climate) experts who rely on Brietbart, Fox News, and InfoWars as their source material. Facts are an anathema with that crowd, education is poison; up is down and down is up as long as their sources tell them so.
