Perhaps Trump’s attention to the flag burning issue is red meat to his base, taking attention away from the fact that he’s little by little going back on his campaign promises.
Two symbols and The Leader: burn a flag and be punished beyond constitutional limits; burn a cross while wearing a sheet and that is OK and even encouraged.
The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Act, more commonly called the Hate Crimes Act or Matthew Shepard Act, was passed in October 2009. The law was enacted in response to two brutal bias-motivated crimes. In one, a gang tortured and killed Matthew Shepard, a student in Wyoming, because they believed he was gay. In the other, two white supremacists dragged James Byrd, Jr., an African American man, behind a truck, eventually decapitating him. Authorities were unable to prosecute either of these horrendous crimes under the then-existing 1969 Federal Hate Crimes Law.
Chapter 13 of title 18, United States Code, is amended by adding at the end the following:
Sec. 249. Hate Crime Acts ``(a) In General.
``(1) OFFENSES INVOLVING ACTUAL OR PERCEIVED RACE, COLOR, RELIGION, OR NATIONAL ORIGIN.
Whoever, whether or not acting under color of law, willfully causes bodily injury to any person or, through the use of fire, a firearm, a dangerous weapon, or an explosive or incendiary device, attempts to cause bodily injury to any person, because of the actual or perceived race, color, religion, or national origin of any person
``(A) shall be imprisoned not more than 10 years, fined in accordance with this title, or both; and
``(B) shall be imprisoned for any term of years or for life, fined in accordance with this title, or both, if
``(i) death results from the offense; or
``(ii) the offense includes kidnapping or an attempt to kidnap, aggravated sexual abuse or an attempt to commit aggravated sexual abuse, or an attempt to kill.

I objected to the flag-burning bill. Perhaps NPP was too busy calling protesters traitors to notice. Opps! [to coin a phrase]
