    Oh, dear. ‘Nonce’ definitely IS a word but it doesn’t mean ‘less than once’. A nonce is a sex offender.

    It is archaic but like the word moot (as in the point is moot) or deserts (as in “just deserts” – sounds like desserts but spelled like deserts) it does live on in one phrase and one phrase only – “for the nonce” as Ubintold said.
