Drabble by Kevin Fagan for December 12, 2016
Transcript:
Clerk: Good morning, Mr. Drabble! How are you? Ralph: Hanging in there. Yesterday I drank that awful concoction you gave me... I didn't get a wink of sleep and I haven't eaten anything in 36 hours! It'll be good to get this over with! Clerk: Actually, your colonoscopy isn't until next Monday!

One of my friends described her own colonoscopy to me, and had to do exactly what Ralph did. Personally, I’d rather ask my primary care physician about Cologuard.

I’ve had several….just wish I could get a “six pack to go” of the drugs they use to put me in lala land.

I had my first colonoscopy last month. I took Prepokit which was orange-flavored and not bad at all. I’d been resisting having the procedure done because I thought that I was too young (52) for anything to be found but they did find and remove a premalignant polyp so I’m glad that I did it.

Love this strip. I have had two. The first time I was awake, and it was cool to see my own appendix – from the inside. Then five years later I had another where they knocked me out…I was told it was because the doc doesn’t want any questions during the procedure.
But the good news was, I’m off the hook for ten years.

Been there done that (due to Crohn’s and colon cancer I have to have a scope every year) Last one I was scheduled for, I was halfway through the prep medications when the doctor’s office called that due to a family emergency the doctor needed to reschedule my examination

I’ve had diarrhea type IBS for years, (thankfully it’s been getting better the last few years). I had a colonoscopy, and everyone was “Isn’t the night before terrible?”. My reply was it wasn’t any worse than many other nights, actually it was better than some.

I actually like the purging process… think of it like spring cleaning for your intestinal tract :) The Michael Jackson drug of choice is sure a pleasant experience too.

There are two other options to a Colonoscopy, both providing less “data”. The least detailed is sending a feces sample in for examination. The other is getting your colon x-rayed, which also requires a day-before purging process, but they don’t knock you out, like in a Colonoscopy.

I have my first full one this coming Friday. First one 13 years ago was a partial so they didn’t knock me out and I drove myself home. -This time I can’t eat any fiber for the prior three days (Starting Tuesday). Can only eat rice, white bread, meat, potatoes, etc. Starting Thursday I can only drink clear liquids. Coffee ok but no reds or purple drinks. Have to drink half of a HUGE jug 5PM – 7PM Thursday and then the other half starting two hours before I leave. Looks like I will have to get up at 3:30AM to start drinking at 4AM! – Can you add some taste to it like kool-aid? I hear it tastes horrible.
Would be easier to just eat a bunch of habanero peppers and couple of cold beers, same result!

I had one earlier this year, at the time I was in the nursing home recovering from a broken leg but the doctor didn’t think that would interfer with the procedure. It turned out to be a comody of errors as far as the nursing home staff was concerned. First, they were suppose to start giving me the purge treatment early in the afternoon, but didn’t actually start until early evening. The stuff was so bad that I made it through 5 or 6 glasses before I was ready to hurl. The next morning I woke up early to get ready for my ride to the hospital, but the aide didn’t answer my call and I needed her help to get dressed for the procedure. After waiting for an hour the driver showed up to take me to the hospital and I told him what was going on so he went to get the aide to make sure she got me ready. A few minutes later I heard the aide waking up someone in the room across the hall and tell them that they had to get dressed because their driver was there and ready to take them to the hospital. I tried yelling to tell her that she had the wrong person but either she didn’t hear me, or she ignored me. I had to wait a half hour until the next shift started and the new aide came in to see why I had my call light on. She got me dressed and ready to go, and fortunately they’d planned for me to arrive early for the procedure so I actually arrived on time and the procedure itself went off without a hitch.

I went for a physical when I was 48. Doctor said; “We usually recommend a colonoscopy at 50 but we might as well get you an early start” and he wrote me a script and told me where to call.I’m now 58 and thinking about maybe getting it done. (Nah. I probably won’t)

Had mine a few months ago.. all clear !
Watched the anesthesiologist as he used a horse syringe to administer the knock-out, next thing i know it’s a 1/2 hr. after the procedure was over..boy, that stuff is smooth..!
For the gallon of Golightly, i dumped an entire bottle of Stur:
sturdrinks.com/product.html & it made the solution drinkable.

One of the docs I’ve worked for estimates that he has saved more lives by prescribing colonoscopies than anything else he’s done. When I mentioned to another, who’s married to my former PCP, that my 50th birthday was the subject of communications between her husband and the gastroenterologist, commented, “That’s a great way to celebrate.” Both that and a five-year followup took benign polyps out of me before they had a chance to go malignant.

My grandma died from colon cancer. I’ve been fortunate to come up “clean” each time.
