Several commentors have hit the nail on the head: Most guys buy snazzy cars in their 40’s because they couldn’t afford them in their 20’s. When I was a 20-something apprentice mechanic I was driving $500 cars. I bought my first brand new car in 2011 (I was 39), a nice, sensible Hyundai Sonata. I was traveling 120 miles per day and needed something easy on fuel and relatively sure-footed in winter. When that car was destroyed in a fire I replaced it with my second, and probably last, brand new car – my 2015 Mustang GT. I have always loved Mustangs, and this would be the first time I could actually afford one, plus my life situation changed – I now travel less than three miles to work,so my beater 4WD truck can be used for commuting in winter. I’m also in a much higher paying job and have much less debt, making the purchase possible. Responsible? Practical? No, but it puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. And, strangely, my insurance went down by a significant amount when I went from a $20k 200-hp FWD family car to a $50k 435-hp RWD sports car.
