A lot of obsolete phones with hard drives get the hammer treatment. What better way to protect privacy and security?

The stories on this are really ridiculous, Anybody in IT will tell you that the only really sure way of making sure sensitive data not left on devices is to destroy the device. Disk drives are often mechanically destroyed when computers are decommissioned in businesses. Solid state devices such as SSD’s phones, etc are physically destroyed. It is actually a very desirable practice to protect information.

So she can’t work her phone, but she can run the country?

I was IT sys admin and I used to tell people that I didn’t know how to work the phones, either. I did know how to work the servers. Come back when you have a server issue. And of course you are upgraded frequently, you often need different phones for different countries, and so on. Destroying a hard drive (yes, your phone has one) so that no data can be recovered is not easy. And as SOS, you don’t just drop it off at the local recycling center. If you don’t know what the f… you are talking about, don’t talk about it.

The only way to assure data is gone is to physically, and totally destroy the drives. The REAL issue however is that State and DOD face hacking attempts in the hundreds, EVERY DAY by hackers. Hillary’s, or Colin’s, or even Condi Rice’s (they all had private ones) were probably more secure than a government one. Which, having years dealing with government “IT security”, I still trust my own MAC more than anything there, or on any “Windows” system machine.

libsmasher has been asked two direct questions about his post at the top. Do you think he will show up to answer ? Certainly not ! He’ll slink away until it’s time to show up to post another willfully inaccurate post..He is not one to believe. He has no pride or backbone at all – remarkably similar to Republican members of Congress.

How to destroy a hard drive: (and they use a hammer)…

https://snapguide.com/guides/destroy-a-hard-drive/..Actually, several months ago, I went through my backlog of hard drives (going back about 20 years) and used screwdrivers to open them up. Not a hammer. Less mess, and the hammer is only really needed for damaging the platters. All else went to the electronics recycling..I saved the platters so my wife can make stuff out of them..Recycle, recycle, recycle...Here’s some more stuff:.http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-to-destroy-a-hard-drive-permanently/.Lots of suggestions here (some of them amusing):.http://www.wikihow.com/Destroy-a-Hard-Drive.

For anyone who has gotten rid of an old phone or computer and DIDN’T smash the hard drive with a hammer like I always do, you are fooling yourself because that data can be retrieved.
