I would go so far as to say it is more UNAmerican to condemn someone protesting injustice, let alone threaten him. Frankly, if you don’t like it, just say nothing. I predict that a lot of athletes from across several sports will start to sit in solidarity not only with Colin but with those who have suffered the injustices he’s highlighting.

The Tea Party people probably hate him. Now what do they take their name from? A bunch of people who protested by dumping TEA! They showed NO Respect to the Crown! So in effect the protesters who are White have the right but not one who is Black!

Yes I agree that it is his right, even though I don’t agree with his method. To me what he is doing is self aggrandizing and does not advance the cause he uses as an excuse to bring attention to himself.

As usual, Mark Twain had something to say pertinent to this situation:.“It is by the goodness of God that in our country we have those three unspeakably precious things: freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, and the prudence never to practice either.”- Following the Equator, Pudd’nhead Wilson’s New Calendar.Find much more he said about things that were true then, true now, and will ever be true at ….www.twainquotes.com

The flag (and the national anthem ) represents the ideals and values we hold collectively as a nation. By honoring the flag we are actually honoring those ideals and values – the flag itself is just a piece of cloth. Not standing is not insulting the flag. There are a whole bunch of possible reasons for not doing so. In any case are a nation of free people and we sit and stand when we want. Freedom to do as we please (as long as it does not harm others ) is what makes our country great. It’s those criticizing Kaepernick who are dishonoring the flag. They forget the ideals it represents.

The big outrage with conservative Republicans, at least that I’m hearing is that by refusing to stand for the National Anthem Colin Kaepernick somehow ‘insulted our veterans.’Meanwhile, these same good ol’ patriots continue to cheer for a guy who slandered a gold star family and belittled John McCain’s war record.

Seems to me that if he does not want to be part of the “tradition of the team”.. which stands. He is not a team member and free to leave..And the team.. should be encouraging that.

The Right values symbols over substance. They’ll bow to a piece of cloth till their back aches, and condemn someone for not engaging in a meaningless ritual of affirmation. They’ll cry at a weeping eagle GIF while denying health care to vets. .That’s not patriotism. That’s a cargo cult.

Thank you Mr. Breen. As a disabled combat veteran who fought for his right to speak, in civilian roles serving this nation, not just military, I find him a much better American, worthy of keeping his job, far more than Trump getting one to destroy the nation.

The anthem is just the anthem, what disturbs me more is Trump’s disdain for the Pledge of Allegiance, and the Constitution and rule of law.

The “fan” reaction confirms why I haven’t watched a football game since 1961, in avoidance of a “game” that preaches violence, and inspires such venom, intolerance, and pure ignorance in the brain-washed populace, even more damaged than the players who sacrificed their bodies and minds for the “sport”.

Pointing out racism is considered ‘playing the race card’ by those who defend the racism in the status quo. They, or their spiritual ancestors, were against every advance in race relations, and their descendants will probably keep it up.

Excellent cartoon, combining visual wit with a thoughtful theme. America will continue to be great if we have the moral courage to acknowledge our flaws and work together to correct them. It also means we cannot kick someone off the team for daring to point out possible errors: they may very well be pointing out the errors we need to correct to survive.

Some serious progression in Breen’s viewpoint! Way back in September 15, 2010, his comic showed a boy, Kevin, who refused to stand and was shamed by his teacher.

Nativism has been around for a long time, the Society for the Star-Spangled Banner, was a nativist secret society in the 1850’s that thought all the countries troubles were the fault of immigrants, specifically Irish Catholics. They evolved into the “know nothings.” Back in 2006, even Bill Kristol described the new populist GOP as an anti-immigrant “know nothing party.”
