Our attitude toward health care should be based on the parable of the good Samaritan. Whether one is a Christian or not, the example the parable sets is an objectively worthy example for a nation to follow.
This is truly despicable. They increased the price by over 500 percent so they could raise top management salaries by a thousand of percent. I guess the capitalists figure that is OK even if they kill a bunch of children. Just the cost of doing business. Clearly the manufacturing cost is probably below 50 dollars. The drug itself is inexpensive. This is simply criminal.
It is government rules and regs that lead to the problem.
“Simply put, the government is providing Mylan with a great deal of price protection in two key ways. The first is the high standard the Food and Drug Administration imposes on any competing auto-injectors. The second is the continued knee-jerk rule that makes almost all drugs in the United States available by prescription only.”
There are laws, there are laws that say they can raise the price as much as they want. They can also have a strangle hold on their drug and delivery system. They can also do as they please to their employees. Why would big pharma care about a little screaming guy anyway? Doesn’t matter which side he is on, he is just another $600 for a CEO.
Donald Rumsfeld’s old company (he still shares profits) holds the patent on Tamiflu, thus the push to get the government, and everyone else to buy it, even though it doesn’t really work for most cases.
Mylan and the epipen is bad news, but only the tiniest tip of a VERY BIG ICEBERG of fraud, deceit, and cooperative Congresses out to make sure their bed is well feathered, even if hospital beds turn into beds of spikes for critically ill patients.
Pharmacy and medicine in this country is extremely profitable for a small minority of folks. Even our highly paid doctors aren’t squat compared to salaries for CEO’s who never touch patients, well, except their wallets. And Insurance companies have orchestrated a very soft seat next to that bed.
Single payer isn’t “socialized medicine”, it’s a step toward cost containment that “conservatives” condemn, because their own profits go down, not out, just down, a tad.
Don’t worry, Conservatives know exactly what to do when a patient can’t afford big pharma’s prices.Send them to jail!http://www.rawstory.com/2016/08/arkansas-judges-debtors-prison-court-jailed-cancer-patient-over-unpaid-bills-lawsuit/
Night-Gaunt49Same as capitalist-based water or electricity. That which is essential to people should be owned by the people, not money-grubber monopolists. Remember G.U.M., the Sovet monopoly department store famous for long lines and empty shelves. Capitalism sorta works when there is real competition, but the goal of capitalism is monopoly.
Before the government stepped in, medicine in this country was handled by the Free Market. Look up ‘patent medicines’ (even the term is a lie) and see how the snake-oil salesmen lied about what their toxic slurries could do, and imagine being a semi-educated parent of a sick kid, trying to figure out how to save her life.

Hard to imagine having to lock up epi in my drug box on my ambulance, along with the morphine.

Seriously, they should just lose their patent…. Or perhaps a President Trump would just encourage some Sekunamenment people to “have their say”.
