The people I know who are into magic, astrology, etc. (is it okay to mention they are all women?) had all suffered trauma of some sort — serious assault, alcoholic parents, crazy abuse by family. Their belief in supernatural gizmos seems to be a coping mechanism, an escape hatch from pain. So when I’m rolling my eyes I try to remember to have compassion. THEN I throw away the rock/amulet/chart.

It’s only bad luck to BELIEVE in bad luck.

Belief can be a powerful force—if you truly BELIEVE you have been cursed, it really can affect your well being. If you really BELIEVE that Friday the 13th is unlucky, you will take note of every little setback to confirm that your luck is bad on that day. If you DON’T believe, you will shrug off the setbacks with “S**t happens!”
