Paul Revere would have been picked off by a British sniper from two kilometers away if they’d had a Barrett .50. We need to consider regulating, as Scalia wrote in “DC vs Heller” as the DUTY of government. It doesn’t have to mean confiscation or disarmament, just some common sense.
What terrorists? We had a natural born American Citizen exercising his Second Amendment rights. Arguably he was also exercising his First Amendment right to Free Speech.
Letting any moron run around with guns is not a sensible policy and clearly was not what the founding fathers intended. We need sensible legislation, similar to a driver’s license that insures people have some training and have passed a background check.
sueamarlucan“You cannot even buy a shotgun or a deer rifle without the background checks.” Sure you can; just go online, or wait until the next traveling armory comes to town in a deserted shopping mall near you. Cash on the barrel head, no questions asked. Or join the Nazi Revolutionary Army; they can put you in contact with someone..Oh, never mind. You said hunting, they only specialize in massive clip autoloaders, not legal nor suitable for hunting, just levying war against the United States and killing people.
When you consider that the ’76ers were armed with muskets and revolvers, both requiring reloading after each shot (and not accurate shots at that), I think our founding fathers may have had a different approach to the 2nd amendment.
From an article in time Magazine written by a gun owner in Australia:“It’s actually not that hard to own a gun. But you do have to have a genuine reason. You have to be a member of a target shooting club or a hunter and you have to prove it. For hunting, you can get written permission from a landowner who says you are hunting on his land. Or you can join a hunting club. Pistols [handguns], on the other hand, are heavily restricted. All applicants undergo a background check by the police and there is a mandatory 30 day cooling off period for all license applications, both long arms and pistols. Firearms safety training courses are mandatory as well. One of the biggest changes is that the government established different types of firearms for different categories of guns and ruled that each would need different licenses. Here’s roughly how it works:Category A is .22s, shotguns and air rifles. That’s the easiest license to obtain. No semiautomatics are allowed.Category B is for center fire rifles. You have to provide a reason for why you need a more powerful gun. I shoot feral pigs and foxes; that’s a valid reason. Again, no semiautomatics.Category C is available only to farmers; they can own a semiautomatic shotgun or .22 but the cartridges are limited to five shots for the shotgun and 10 shots for the .22.Category D, for semiautomatic guns and rifles, is only for professional shooters: you have to have a registered business and prove that you are earning an income through shooting. An H license is for handguns. If you want to buy a pistol in Australia you’ve got to be a member of a target pistol club. You’ve got to do a minimum of eight competition shoots per year to keep your license. If you don’t, you lose it.Category G is for collectors. For that you’ve got to attend at least one meeting per year.I have licenses for Categories A, B, H and G.”http://time.com/4172274/what-its-like-to-own-guns-in-a-country-with-strict-gun-control/
The NRA works vigorously at trying to convince everyone that if everyone carried a gun, everyone would be safe. It is exactly the same as the “rising tide will lift all boats”. Clearly it does not work. They keep spouting any regulation is the “slippery slope” that will lead to taking everyone’s guns away. Propaganda at its best. Clearly the NRA and the gun manufacturers are serving there best interests. They really don’t care if anyone gets killed. They just use it as an opportunity to scare more people into buying guns. There have been plenty of good studies that having a self defense gun in the house makes the family statistically less safe because more accidents, theft, and suicides take place. There are plenty of morons who put a loaded handgun under their pillow and then their kid ends up finding it and shooting themselves or a neighbor kid. Even if you blow someone away in “self defense” you better be able to prove it if you don’t want to go away to the slammer. And even then the victim’s family can sue your butt.
FYI:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepper-boxThe pepper-box revolver or simply pepperbox (also “pepper-pot”, from its resemblance to the household pepper grinder) is a multiple-barrel repeating firearm that has three or more barrels grouped around a central axis. It mostly appears in the form of a multi-shot handheld firearm. Pepperboxes exist in all ammunition systems: matchlock, wheellock, flintlock, percussion, pinfire, rimfire and centerfire.
The pepperbox should not be confused with a volley gun (like the seven-barrel long gun made by Nock), a firearm that fires multiple projectiles simultaneously by use of multiple barrels.1 The difference is that a volleygun fires all the barrels simultaneously while the pepperbox is a repeater. The pepperbox should also not be confused with or as a development of the Gatling gun, which fires rapidly by the use of rotating multiple barrels.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puckle_gun" …The Puckle gun (also known as the Defence gun) was a primitive crew-served, manually-operated flintlock1 revolver patented in 1718 by James Puckle (1667–1724) a British inventor, lawyer and writer. It was one of the earliest weapons to be referred to as a “machine gun”, being called such in a 1722 shipping manifest,2 though its operation does not match the modern use of the term.… "
Sue: the Sig Sauer that Mateen used is a far more “militarized” firearm than an AR-15, as noted by the manufacturer. All those vents are to keep the barrel from overheating when firing large volumes of ammunition. It is NOT a “hunting rifle” intended for game such as deer or elk, even though it can be used for that, the testosterone deprived buy them for their looks, not so much function When a dweeb like Mateen buys them it’s for a rather distorted function, like abortion clinics in Colorado, schoolrooms, or the occasional gay bar. (All our terrorists are definitely NOT Muslims!)
For those that think that possession of an AR15 is necessary to defend against some ‘oppressive government’ let me point out the obvious: That same government has drones and B52’s. I suspect that a .223 round would be just about useless.
ChevJames007Yes, we were using “clip” in the civilian definition rather than the military both because most Americans are civilian, and because under the constitution, civil authority is higher than military. I have never fired a fully automatic firearm and have no wish to. I do own a .54 carbine and a 32 ga. double barrel shotgun, both flintlocks, so I do know what the authors of the Second Amendment were considering. Those leave a noticeable puff of smoke to reveal one’s position, unlike the coward’s smokeless powder that enables them to stay hidden while spraying the countryside with a series of 30 round clips/magazines – and I can spray with an autoloader as fast as a 19th century machingun, thanks to effective tremor in my right hand. You are a militarized nitpicker, not an authority – authoritarian, undoubtably; levying war against the United States, probably – but you only “know” what you have been indoctrinated to know, just as I have, raised during WW-II when we all knew whom our enemy was.
There is a meme on facebook that I feel is relevant in this discussion: If you cannot see the irony in having a gun ban enforced by men with guns, then you fail to understand why the second amendment was written in the first place. It’s true, because the largest slaughter in our nation’s history was when we disarmed a populace and then shot them all, including women and children. I also would like to know how disarming a law-abiding populace will make them safer from those who refuse to abide by the law.
^Chev: for once I agree, we have a nut job problem: “sovereigns”, militias, gang-bangers, KKK, the hundreds of hate groups that have sprung up since Obama was elected, and the lunatic frightened fringe of the NRA who represent an extremely small percentage of gun owners in the US.
BTW: 22 magnum is an excellent coyote round, as is .243, yes .223 from a “wood and steel” weapon with solid weight making it far more accurate at a distance than an AR style weapon. There is a reason for “bull barrels” on varmint rifles as opposed to the inaccuracy of those plastic lightweights good for close work. Max “effective range” of a AR or M-16 is around 700 yards, good varimint guns are just warming up. Barrett .50 is still warming up at three times that distance, it IS a military weapon, though I’ve heard of morons using ’em on deer; instant ground venison.
Westboro Baptist Church folks are a lot more psycho than even “radicalized” Muslims, but another key issue is the “social media” that is turning a large number of people into haters, hermits, and nuts with guns. Islam, evangelicals, white supremacists, black supremacists, drug dealers, the computer, or “smart phone” isn’t the weapon, but more often every day, it’s the tool that leads to acquiring, and USING, the deadly weapon.
The availability of these weapons makes it easier for "terrorists ", no matter what extremist religious views they have , or in most of these cases don’t have.

It’s called “common sense” regulation. Apparently you have none, Ken if you actually think this way.

Once again:
ANY regulation of any kind is exactly the same as total confiscation of all guns of every kind from every citizen.(Except criminals, of course)
And OBAMA IS COMING TO TAKE YOUR GUNS!And after that, he is going to invade Texas. Again.
