I never fully appreciated GT’s genius at drawing before. The profile of Jeremy’s face just shouts banality, the quintessential nerd.

I think it’s a carry-over from Peanuts (the strip’s like a fusion of Peanuts and Feiffer for me), where complete circles around the eyes identify a child, like Lucy in the current set of older Peanuts reprints here. As the child gets older and loses some of the wide-eyed innocence, the circles recede to where they’re a pair of parentheses surrounding the pupils.
He has other conventions for different kinds of characters, but the innocent ingenue types favor parentheses. Wide-eyed innocence?
