Everybody thinks everybody else is getting free money from the gummint for doing nothing. This is due to the commercials on Faux Noise advertising scams.
Since only about 10% of people are left handed, this means that a ‘leftist’ is more likely to be left handed than the general population. The majority of Americans do not know what science is, so naturally they cannot see any point in studying what makes no difference to their personal lives. The information is available online, but that means concentration on what has no obvious significance to their personal lives, which is intolerable. So intellectual laziness sustains self-satisfied ignorance, breeding creationists, anti-vaxxers, climate change deniers, and a wide range of lesser absurdities.
I’ll never forget the first time—when I was in college—50 years ago—doing a diatribe against research using fruit flies. (At 19, you know everything, you know. . .) The professor very kindly let me go on, then quietly explained that fruit flies (and mice) were used because their life spans were so short that the looked-for effect came to light much sooner. So many of those “silly, unbelievable” research projects have led to better cancer treatment, vaccines for many kinds of diseases, hybrid crops that can be grown in inhospitable places, fewer birth defects, etc. It really Is necessary to read/research further than the two or three paragraphs in the newspaper. Fortunately, there are many fine scientific publications on the market today that make science readable, understandable, and enjoyable.
Interesting that they show this as created by G. Brookins and S. MacNelly. I don’t know the date but this was originally drawn by Jeff MacNelly himself. I’ve seen it in one of the old books. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen this. I think they should do proper attributions.
