    had kumquats in the 1940s. Flax was for linen, not eating. Edamame was called soy beans and used in WW-II as a protein substitute for rationed meat. Lettuce was called lettuce without specifying variety. Mahi mahi was called dolphin or dorado (to distinguish from propoise), but the now endangered red snapper was preferred. It mostly is he father’s grocery cart.
