Prop 13 explains the root cause, I believe:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Proposition_13_(1978)A problem that could be solved, if only we did not have such entrenched, polarized, political views.
I owned a home in Santa Monica and my property taxes went from $600 to $5800 in four years. At that time the $5800 a year was more than my house payment and about 20% of my annual income. I would of had no choice but to sell. Then rent control passed and I sold the whole mess, got out of Dodge and moved to western Colorado. Today my property taxes are $491 on a better house than I had in California. I wouldn’t go back if someone gave me a house.
Regulations.. mean you can not be blessed with a tin shack housing 15 homeless people next to you. That your home is built to acceptable standards. That you can not pitch your tent in the middle of a road or airport runway.
This cartoon shows CA housing prices bound by three items – none of which are the market demand. Zoning laws, environmental and regulations most certainly do protect us. We have seen the results of uncontrolled development .CA housing prices are high; living here is very desireable.
To say nothing of the finest education system in the nation going into the toilet once it was starved of support. I guess that’s a good thing, the poorly educated love to vote republican.
I rather have a beer or coffee (your choice) with an intelligent, open minded conservative than liberal who repeats pat lines. The fact that you use solar panels and drive a hybrid means you want this country to be energy independent while still showing regard for the environment. It also shows you like to save money (smart).Conservatives argue against government regulations because they hurt economic growth. Yet, we have to realize that we had laissez faire economics in the West from the start of the industrial revolution to the Great Depression. It created great economic development. It also created horrible living conditions for tens of millions of people. Workers were paid in company script which they could only use at the company store and lived in shoddy company housing. There were no safety rules. No compensation for unemployed. No rules regarding work hours. Child labor was rampant. The regulations that came into being were a real response to real problems. My question to conservatives is this: Why are states like Arizona and Nevada making it harder for people to use solar energy? You would think, they should consider sunshine a natural resource of which they should take full advantage. Instead, the state governments have gone out of their way to push the solar industries out of their states.

Your statement would have been very eloquent and commendable if it weren’t for the insults.

Bruce, O.C. was criticizing Republicans (if I read that correctly).
If you are not a Republican, why are you offended by his criticism?
