When my husband was in school he got into an argument with a teacher regarding London Bridge & Tower Bridge. The teacher showed pictures of Tower Bridge & said that it was London Bridge. When the teacher asked how he could possibly know that, he said, “Because I’ve BEEN to England & have SEEN it.” One of the few times my husband’s mother actually stood up for him was when she was called in to discuss his “disrespect” with the principal.
OK, I know that this is just a comic strip, but nonetheless, a coupla problems stand out. First, there is still a London Bridge in London – it’s a nondescript thing that was built in the 70s (though I suppose it’s possible that it wasn’t given the London Bridge moniker until it had been in service for a few years). Second, Buckingham Palace is too far from the river for any of the bridges to be visible from the guard post. He might as well have added that St. Paul’s Cathedral had been stolen – “Blimey! I can’t see it from here. It must be gone!”
