Think Gramps feels bad then in the early 1980s? How do you think I feel today? I remember singing Beatles songs in 1965 at the age of 5. Their songs are still some of the best stuff ever.
I worked in the record department of a local Bradlees in my 20s. One day some teenaged girls were looking at some albums. I overheard this conversation:
“Paul McCartney? Who’s he?”
“I’m not sure; didn’t he used to be in the band Wings?”
I just about choked. Incidentally, the Beatles have been our 11-year-old daughter’s favorite band since she was about 3, and Paul is her 2nd favorite solo singer (following Elvis).
Several years ago I met children who never heard of the Beatles. It’s wonderful I’m old enough to have lived in the 60’s. I graduated from high school in 1967.
The preachers had a field day when Elvis got popular.You know making all those lewd moves and all, just exciting young girls. Everyone who listened to him was going to hell. Then when the Beatles came along, again all that sinful singing.I ain’t making this up. Somewhere in the Bible Belt a preacher had all the kids in his church to bring their records (priceless vinyl), stereos and radios to church.He made a huge bonfire and they burned them all (the stereos and radios, not the kids).I saw this on the news (TV news, when TV news actually reported what happened).Now the preacher was famous. So he’s standing by the smoldering ruins and poking at it with a stick.To quote, “See ‘at green fahr? ’At’s the DEVIL a-burnin’ out ovun it. Th’ DEVIL burns green.”This idiot was dressed in plaid shirt and overalls.I’m almost afraid to give you his name. The ineffable Reverend Hiram Strawcutter.Bible Belt America. You can’t make this stuff up.
I am old enough to have lived through that era, and while I thought the Beatles were okay, I also didn’t like them all that much except for a small handful of their songs. I preferred the Rolling Stones (and still think early-ish Rolling Stones, say about second half of the ’60s to the early ’70s, is the best). And those guys, nearly my age, are still touring!
