Remember, the same thing happens when you actually vote for President. Your votes determine how many Electors your state sends to the Electoral College, and they cast the votes for President. And they are not necessarily required to vote in a way which reflects how the population voted. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUS9mM8Xbbw and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wC42HgLA4k cover the process and its problems nicely.
Democrats cast their votes and a percentage of delegates goes to the winner. Republicans cast their votes and delegates go to the winner. The parties have a number of different ways to help pull the votes in one direction of the other. Then the winners go on to vie for president. If we want a one-person-one-vote system, we’ll have to get the money out of the process. We’ll have to break down the party system, and we’ll have to re-write the constitution. The electoral college was put into place so the larger more populous areas wouldn’t just crank out political leaders, allowing more rural areas to have some say in the process. If we were moving to anything, I’d rather see a ranked-choice voting system. I like the idea of one-person-one-vote. But as seen over the past 300 years or so, the minority must have some say in politics or they will be run over by the majority.
We used to be a republic that ran with Democracy as a guideline. The idea was to make things fair to everyone. This change started with Reagan and has gotten worse since then.

If voting could change anything it would be illegal.
