Mom and Dad can find solace in the fact that Calvin is well read when the bills arrive.

It’s a scam. The magazine companies can’t really do anything to you if you don’t pay. They can’t prove that you were the actual person who requested the magazines to begin with. Of course, in today’s world, who gets paper magazines anymore anyway?

Why is their mailbox so high that Hobbes has to lift Calvin over his head to reach it?

Let’s hope Playboy isn’t one of his magazine subscriptions.

Brilliant. There is no bill collector alive who can chase a 6 year old.

About 35+ yrs ago, we filled out every non-duplicated card we could find and enrolled one of our “favorite” co-workers. His address was our place of employment. It was comical to see all these magazines arrive and get put on his desk! I’m guessing he would anywhere between 5-15 a day. I think he just threw the bills away. The magazines stopped after 4-6 months.Just a nice sampling-Cosmopolitian, Playgirl, anything that would send red flags up and most were NSFW!. remember, this was 35+ yrs ago!

I actually managed to get quite a few LP records for very little money from an offer made by “Record Club of America”, I think it was. The offer was something like 3 LPs for $0.99, with no obligation to buy any more. I simply filled out a lot of offer cards with fake names and had them all sent to my address, spaced out over several months. I did notice though, that the records were probably manufacturing “seconds”. There were various cosmetic “errors”, mostly misaligned labels. Sounded fine, though. :-)

How could Calvin reach the mailbox? The tiger is imaginary except in his mind. Calvin’s imagination cannot make the tiger reach the mailbox.

I am fairly certain the subscription costs cover the raw materials used to produce the mag and get it distributed. It’s the advertisers that actually support the publishers…

A few weeks later… “Zounds! A Zuckian approaches our hero with a piece of paper. Spaceman Spiff’s insurance. ’How much? $143? Good heavens!”. (Calvin getting the bills while playing spaceman Spiff).
