Rocking chairs are dangerous: a kid is guaranteed to overbalance. They just can’t help but rock vigorously. Of course, that could be a learning experience.
Well, Violet was the first one to pull the ball away from Charlie Brown, although it was an accident then. At some point, her pigtails morphed into a ponytail and she became more of a foil for him than she was at this point, but although she could sometimes be seen in the background or crowd scenes, she stopped being a major character. She was just the girl with the ponytail. My guess is, once Lucy was introduced, Schulz found her a far more interesting character.
It looks like the shoes were the only thing that created balance. Anyway, it’s quite surprising how much the strip changed over the years. Charlie Brown was more positive, more mischievous, more prone to self defense, and everyone was nicer to him. Not to mention Snoopy was a somewhat normal dog.
