Did Stacy pick the name “Ecstasy” because it’s her drug of choice? If so, then Bernice and Luann will be renamed “Mydol” and “Flintstone Vitamin”.

Real New Yorkers look like that when driving because there is only about 1 inch to the next vehicle and the potholes tend to throw your aim off.

If the hair streak is supposed to be natural then the name errors could be due to some hearing limitations. Neural Crest genetic variations alter some of the embryo’s earliest cells, ones that exist before more complex structures form, and which have the potential to develop into multiple types of cells. There are a range of chromosomal locations and types. Of variations so there are multiple names and acronyms like Waardenburg, KIT, LEOPARD, etc. The effects vary in degrees among individuals, but two things those cells develop into are some ear structures, and pigment cells, so things like white hair streaks going along with some hearing loss can often be encountered.

Why are they driving instead of using public transportation. Then again I’ve only used public transport here in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, and Amtrak for long distance,so I don’t know what conditions are like in NYC. I also use one of my bicycles when the weather is good.

Well, Ecstasy does anagram to “Yes, cast!” so maybe she has something there.Of course, it also anagrams to “Cats, yes!,” “Scat, yes!,” and “Sea Cyst,” so maybe trying to find clues through anagramming is a waste of time. Fun, though.

@Flash Gordon: JFK and La Guardia aren’t that convenient to public transportation. There are ways, but driving is certainly easier, especially with luggage. For getting around town in NYC on a daily basis, yes, public transit (or walking!) is much better.

I noticed that other commentators pointed out something I thought about when I first looked at the comic for today, which is that Stacy/Ecstasy is driving a car in New York, presumably Manhattan. That struck me as odd because theater people in Manhattan, or even Brooklyn, which is newly an “in” place per what I read, don’t generally own or drive cars because of the expense and difficulty of using a car in New York in general, and because public transportation is so ubiquitous. My answer to incongruity in Luann is that this is Luannverse, so everything is created with that as a focus, although maybe this is a rent and drive car, or maybe Stacy is an Uber or Lfyt driver? I think what is probably more interesting is how she is trying to get Luann and Bernice in the New York attitude of don’t mess with me, I don’t notice you type thing.

Can’t wait to see the adventures they get into.

7Stacy is indeed interesting. I thought it was very funny that Mordy sort-of suggested at least a possibility that Stacy may be Shannon’s mother! That would be hilarious, albeit unlikely. For me, when I first looked at the comic about 4:30am when I get up to go on my 5-mile walk with my dog and have my morning pipe, it looked initially that in the last panel Stacy was trying to do a sword swallowing routine. It was probably a mix of being a bit groggy in the early morning, the small screen size (phone), and Stacy’s big open-mouth expression that combined to give me that inaccurate impression. But, it take me 3-4 glances to figure out it was the edge of the windshield of her vehicle. I am guessing that Stacy purposefully put the white band in her hair. The genetic variant that can cause a natural white lock like that typically manifests itself in the front, not the side towards the back, so I suspect it was a purposeful bleaching or dying job for Stacy’s white band. My favorite expression in today’s panel is Luann in the back seat, trying to adopt the “New York look”. It is very, very funny. Now, like Mordy, although I am probably lagging behind him, I need to get my 24 oz robusto coffee into me to get me more energized for a busier day.

Good Morning Sukie!Yes, I too, immediately thought Wardenburg Syndrome when I saw Stacy’s hair. But, I am guessing the hair streak is more likely than not a purposefully added streak in her hair, rather than an sign of the disorder. I say this mostly because the lion’s share of folks with the condition have the white streak in the front locks on the face.It was interesting that you mentioned neural crest cell migration, as it was the primary topic I was lecturing to my student about yesterday as we the continued describing the development of the ectoderm. It seems to be another topic of interest you and I share!

I know several people who live in Manhattan who own cars in common with a group of friends. This allows them to pool resources for parking costs and the cost of the car yet have the car as necessary. Further, I know one person who lives in Manhattan but has a car that she parks in NJ and uses for weekend trips or to pick up relatives/friends who fly into Newark.

Funny, but that triggered the memory of my first RA in college who had jet black hair and a perfect prematurely-white streak in the front. I’d never heard of the connection between that and hearing loss either.

Anyone think they could be stopped in traffic or at a light? From Bernice’s comment, probably not. Still Ms E could have a Zipcar, and is probably not a native New Yorker.

@twgtwg, ekekekekek, luannfan1212, many NYers do have cars as I can attest to when trying to get a parking place as a student in Brooklyn and a working stiff in Washington Heights. I worked in NJ so did need a car. Actors may have cars, but would live in Bronx, Queens, NJ… They would most likely try to keep the car registered and insured in their hometown. There is a lot more to NYC than mid-town. @kerumbo Obviously if you look at all the buildings with all the apartments with the millions of people there, the majority of NYers, don’t have cars, like my brother, but he, like many do have licenses!

Certainly possible, as is having it colored (or color removed…)

The streaks associated w hearing loss are lifelong, but early hair whitening or silvering can be extremely striking in appearance. More often than not attractive against a young face, i think.

Luanniverse is a parallel cosmos that split off from ours about the time Greg began to draw early versions of this strip. A striking coincidence! So it is not surprising that driving in Luannew-York is dissimilar to our New York. Also, as I mentioned, there is an odd distortion in their space-time continuum which will only grow as our time progresses. Greg Evans’s brain is now the only entangled quantum state with Luanniverse. From time to time we will observe the odd anachronism. Commenters who find discrepancies are merely proving the correctness of my theory.

There have been cross overs learned from research on other species that helped both ferrets and humans. For instance, the LH receptor work was in humans, but as a result two groups looking at methods to reduce rates of adrenal growths in ferrets are seeing if insulinoma rates also go down. Compounding pharmacy work with proglycem to help ferrets with insulinoma wound up helping children born with steroid resistent low blood glucose. Years ago i replied to someone whose daughter was in that position and got them in touch with compounding pharmacies in other states since HI lacked that resource for some time. That led to the parents sharing that info on a help list. Later i helped them find how to navigate the FDA importation regs during a shortage since i knew about that due to a veterinary med that was not available here.

Closer to home for many people is that the discovery of Helicobactor flares as the trigger for many stomach ulcers and its treatment began because ferrets have the same problem from a different species of Helicobactor than the one humans get. James Fox at the Dept of Comparative Med of MIT and his group did the original work on ferrets, and learning that led to the human research which has reduced pain and risks of death for many people.

    -Google to the rescue

Top 4 Manhattan neighborhoods by car ownership, as of December 2015:

Tribeca – 36 percent of population reported owning a car

Upper East side – 28 percent

    Battery Park – 28 percent

    Union Square – 27 percent

Okay, nothing like elsewhere in the US, but still more than zero.

And lowest self reporting car ownership were Hell’s Kitchen (11 percent), Kips Bay (13 percent) and Financial District (14 percent)

    Source was Address Report

Streetsblog.org reported that the Census collected info in 2009 for all New York City households, and 46 percent reported car ownership.

The “peace symbol” is wrong if it does not contain a vertical bar extending all the way to the bottom. The symbol is the superposition of the semaphore flag symbols for the letters “N” and “D”, meaning “nuclear disarmament”.
