If memory serves me correctly, there was not actually an oil shortage. There was a rubber shortage. Gas was rationed to save the tires. We were still using natural rubber and the government created the artifical rubber producing plants to meet the demand for more tires. After the war, the plants were sold to Goodyear. I used to work in the plant in Houston.
Hi Davidf42, I worked for the Armco Steel plant in Houston until it closed down in 1981. I then moved to Arkansas and started my own business in ornamental iron.

Well, we know this is World War II,. The gas rations didn’t appear until the war broke out.

I remember the gas rationing. It drew neighbors together, if only to car pool to the store.
