In the past 100 years, 19 Supreme Court Justices were nominated AND confirmed in an election year:KaganAlitoBreyerSouterScaliaRehnquistBlackmunGoldbergWhiteWarrenVinsenMurphyReedRobertsCardozoHughesSutherlandClarkeBrandeis. So let’s just stop this nonsense about how Obama can’t carry out his Constitutional responsibilities, and how the Senate isn’t obligated to carry out theirs
Gun control. The majority of USAmericans want to keep nuclear weapons, the Air Force, the Navy, and the Army out of the hands of maniacs such as Bush, Clinton, and Obama.States’ rights.
Republicans, they play politics and partisanship above all.I like the list of the 19 justices appointed during a president’s last year. Why do the “partisanship first” and the media lie so much? It takes effort to look up, and find the truth, but worth the effort to find out, especially when important facts about our ruler’s ruling because it is That Important.
The naked power grab of the greedy republicans continue as they try to wrest democracy out of the hands of the people. Impeach Mitch McConnell for 7 years of dereliction of duty.
He shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur; and he shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, Judges of the supreme Court, and all other Officers of the United States, whose Appointments are not herein otherwise provided for, and which shall be established by Law: but the Congress may by Law vest the Appointment of such inferior Officers, as they think proper, in the President alone, in the Courts of Law, or in the Heads of Departments.Article II – Section 2 United States Constitution
Now where in there does it say “Except in an election year?”…One hopes that someone who would take an oath of office to protect and defend this document would know what’s in it. Apparently they are as ignorant of the constitution as they are about most everything else.
Ever notice how when the right is in it is a mandate – when the left is in they are subverting the will of the people?Ever notice how the right rails against Obama for going too far on Obamacare and immigration but then cede broad authority to the White House to fight ISIS?Ever notice who the first to stand up and say “NO” is, and who the last one to stand up and offer an idea?Ever notice how one side says politicians are the problem – yet they keep getting voted in, as a politician.
When W expanded the powers of the Executive branch the right forgot that Democrats get to be president too. Do you think they will remember when they get in and the Legislative branch does nothing – that they are the ones who set the president? When they aren’t allowed to nominate judges will there be an outcry? When the Left Senate starts to deal with foreign bodies and send them communications, will the Republican president be ok with that? how about when they start heckling him from the Senate halls during his SOTU?
If the president nominates a person, the senate must confirm or deny the nomination. I they fail to do so, they are in violation of the constitution which, being the highest law in the land, makes the omission at least a felony and grounds for impeachment.
I bet the R’s would love to have all 100 seats come open in November, especially since if he wants to during a senatorial recess, Obama could appoint all 100 vacancies.
“Obama should be able to choose. But this is politics and the dems would have done the same thing to Bush if the roles were reversed…”There was a lot of grousing on the Democratic side after Alito was confirmed because many felt he was not truthful about how he would make decisions during his confirmation hearings. He has turned out to be more conservative than Scalia. If Obama nominates a staunch liberal, I fully expect the Republicans would quickly vote down the nominee. If he follows Reagan’s precedent of nominating a relative moderate like Kennedy, I would expect them to give careful consideration. If the GOP leadership had half a brain, they would have said as much. My guess is the nomination will drag on until after the election, regardless. Should Sanders win in November, Republicans would probably be much happier with an Obama nominee…
