My youngest daughter received several gift cards two and three years ago. She recently told me that she had used her last gift card this year. Apparently money was tight for them and she’d been using the gift cards whenever they needed something and didn’t have the cash for it. So, gift cards can be a blessing sometimes.
Gift cards are restrictive. I go straight to good old cash. Everyone loves the color and no one ever complains I got the wrong size. Christmas Blessings to all !!
When I was in college a couple friends of mine got married the day after she graduated (he graduated a year earlier) and they were going straight from the wedding to his new home out west with just a mid size car to carry all their stuff. I figured the one thing they didn’t need was another wedding gift taking up space in their loaded car so I got them a gift certificate (this was before gift cards came out) for a national department store. Once they got settled in they were able to take the gift certificate and buy something that they actually needed for their new home without dragging it across country. Sometimes gift cards make sense.
If you don’t know what to give, ask. Or give cash and a nice card. Gift cards can get lost, may lose value each month, and are usually for a single chain. Or offer to take them shopping at a venue/website of their choice.
I give iTune gift cards. I also like to get them. I use Apple services, and store credit is a convenient way to pay for them. I sometimes by music or books, as well.

I quit giving gift cards when I found out most of the recipients hadn’t used the cards 3 years later.

I love gift cards. Especially when a person does not know what you really want.
