Bob Beamon’s world record jump of 29 feet, 2 1/2 inches at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City was one of the most amazing athletic feats of all time. He broke the previous world record by nearly two feet!
He did have nearly everything in his favor that day. Mexico City is at an altitude of 7,382 feet, which lowered wind resistance. He had a tail wind of 2 cm/second, the maximum allowable amount for a legal jump.
Of course, that makes Mike Powell’s record breaking jump even more remarkable, since he did it without wind assistance and at sea level, but Beamon’s jump is still the second longest legal jump ever.
