Bad idea, and dangerous for cats. Trees are often treated with chemicals to try and prevent them from catching fire. These chemicals leech into the water and can poison pets. Even if the tree isn’t treated, the sap (which leeches into the water) can be toxic.
If the water is accessible, cover it with something to keep pets out.

Had this happen yesterday while trimming our tree. Our tree stand is such that the cat couldn’t get to the water but he still tried.
