At four in the morning, a few miles from Lansing Michigan in January….We ran out of gas, there were three of us….it was 4 degrees….We tries knocking on some doors, but nobody was answering….No traffic, very dark (the back story is that the driver was trying to get to Kalamazoo fro Grand Rapids, but ended up near Lansing….Hey, things happen after gigs.) Anyway,I mentioned to the others, just about the time things were looking the most hopeless, that “If nothing else, this will make a great story someday!” in my most hopeful voice….They were in no mood to hear it, for some reason..Hey,.It really was cold!..Just about the time they were going to strangle me, a car came by, picked us up, got us gas, the guy took us to his house to have a couple beers rolled one and dropped us off back at the car…..We got back to Kazoo at 7:30……And whenever we 3 get together, we talk about that night and laugh……
As a writer and writing teacher who been told by hundreds of people that they will write that novel or memoir “one of these days” which usually means never, I’d say this cemetery epitaph is for “gonna be” writers, not unknown ones.
p51strega, good call………strictures, well, people who live there I suppose…I go for all the great music…It’s a beautiful little hilly town with lots of lakes….Great restaurants, Kalamazoo College, (Hoity toity), WMU, the Junior Tennis Championships, The huge dunes of Lake Michigan right next door…….In addition to the great music, it has a lively art scene, of all kinds….All the summer festivals,,,Rib Fest, Blues Fest, Island Fest, Greek Fest, Black Arts Fest, Taste of Brew….Bach Festival…Gilmore Keyboard Festival, Belle’s Beer, all the museums and especially the people. Friendly folks…..Beautiful parks………The beautiful women..(Daddy sends them there if they can’t get into MSU or U of M, very cute, pretty darn smart, and party people……. Oh, and lots of old beautiful renovated buildings downtown…For 50 bucks you can hop a train to Chicago……Kalamazoo has at least one of anything you’d want………
