this is too close to reality – wife kept hearing a clunk every time she made a turn with the car. sometimes it would clunk on the left and sometimes it would clunk on the right. so since i wasn’t at home she decided to take it to our mechanic in case it was something serious. you may have guessed – it was a ball our kids had placed in the trunk and when she made a turn it would roll to the side of the trunk and clunk against the wall. we have used our mechanic for years so he drove the car around the block and when he got back he smiled at my wife, handed her the ball, and said ‘i fixed it, no charge’. it took about three or four weeks before i heard about it from my daughter as my wife was way too embarrassed to tell me.

I remember reading an article once where the writer and his partner drove around the country checking out repair shops in different towns to see how many of them were cheating their customers. Before going into a shop they’d sabotage their own car, something simple like loosening the fan belt or pulling a plug wire and then go in to see what the mechanic would tell them. It was disturbing how many mechanics tried to charge them an arm and a leg for repairs they didn’t need. One day they were coming into a town and their car started acting up for real, they took it to the local mechanic and he found the problem right away, the last mechanic who’s cheated them put in a new air manifold, but when he tore it out of the package part of the wrapper got stuck to the intake and when it worked loose it blocked the airflow. The mechanic didn’t even charge them because it was such a simple fix, and he felt guilty that they’d been “cheated” by the other mechanic.

A mechanic friend of mine told me once a customer of his came all worried about a strange rattling coming from the back of the car. It turned out to be an empty soda can that had fallen out of a rubbish bag on a recent trip to the recycling depot. He didn’t charge him.

There are good mechanics and garages like good computer techs. I have both and trust my devices with them, and highly recommend them to others.
