When I’m with friends, the phones, tablets, and readers disappear, but I dread Thanksgiving with my in-laws where communication with people in the same house is the exception, exacerbated by football games.
At my place of employment (from which I was just laid off), about half of my co-workers, in the lunchroom, or on break, were texting, returning calls, or just chatting with others who were not present. Like the television, these communication devices are mis-used, like a young child let loose in a candy store.
Technology is a gift and a curse. On the one hand it’s wonderful where you can video conference with friends and relatives from far places, but then there’s the flip side where that’s all people pay attention to.
Too true – also its making us less aware. I don’t know how many people whose nose was in their handheld devices I have stopped from stepping off the curb into rushing traffic. But I do get some satisfaction from watching them walk into trees, lamp posts and subway pylons.
