Everyone should join the NRA; overwhelm the membership; a hostile takeover; fire management; get new directors; rewrite the charter & mission statement; inject common sense into this scourge organization; fire all the lobbyists; release records of deals with legislators & officials; let in the light.

Oh I bet if that started to happen they would only allow registered gun owners to join. They would be all for their own background check and registration. This isn’t about common sense, it is pure and simple power and control. I remember a time in the past when the NRA was outraged that the government was trying to ban the sale of teflon coated bullets designed to penetrate bullet proof vests. They felt it was a major infringement on gun owner rights.

Doesn’t the NRA vote in it’s leadership? And, if not, why not?

Thomas Jefferson had never met an assault rifle. It is sensible for a person to have a weapon for defense, in the unlikely event that someone could break into his house, although statistically it is more likely that someone in the family that will be killed by that gun than an intruder. It is also sensible for guns to be purchased for hunting. In some areas, a deer in the freezer is important in the food budget. Killing because you enjoy it is a character defect, but then so is smoking. All that said, things have changed since the constitution was written. Being able to purchase weapons whose only objective is to kill as many people as possible in as short a time as possible is not something that is in the best interest of the majority of people. And, your right to swing your arms ends just short of my nose.

Lots of sensible comments so far. People have had with the overwhelming presence of guns.

How about this novel idea. Instead of fixating on the gun, fixate on the issues causing the violence in the first place. The violence is going to continue even if you remove the guns and history shows us things like murder rates and violent crime don’t change just because guns are banned. Time to grow up, put on your big boy pants, and start looking at the real problems and come up with fixes that can generate real change.
