I had a great-uncle who, to put it politely, had no fixed abode, no gainful employment, and liked a wee drop o’ drink. He and his compatriots called the city park home during the warm weather.<p.But when Fall was in the air and the temperatures headed towards freezing, Uncle Tom ( yes, that was his real name ! ) would hurl a brick through the police station window or something else of that nature. It would be enough to get him locked up in County Jail for the duration of the cold weather. He, and his fellow knights of the fresh air, would be let out in the Spring, in time to enjoy the beauty of the Park, once again.
He lived “rough” for most of his adult life. He died at 96 years old and was never sick a day in his life.
Reminds me of a recent encounter with a bank teller who was able to identify me as a long-time customer, simply because my checking account number had relatively few digits.
