a low tip is an opinion in itself, sometimes. A pro waiter will never sneer.

What’s wrong with a dollar tip? That’s a dollar he didn’t have a minute before.
He should have given better service.

You should see the floor show you get for 3 cents. They’ll even follow you out of the restaurant to throw the pennies at you.
(Under IRS rules tips are supposed to go to the management which is supposed to withhold taxes, then distribute the tips according to job category. There didn’t used to be a box on the W-2 or 1040 for “Tips”. And people wonder why I complain about the growth of government.)

When I waitressed in the early 90’s, I worked at a hotel (Courtyard) restaurant and my typical tip for the breakfast and lunch shift was $1/person. I still managed to save enough for a 10% down payment on a house (and I was living far away from my parents so I didn’t save on rent). I’m not sure I could do it again, but it is possible with a lot of self control.

I always pay with credit card, but I leave the tip in cash. The waiter can do as he pleases about reporting it. Be sure and mark the tip on your credit card as none and write the total charge in the space ;provided.

I tipped a waiter three cents for poor service once, and he never gave me poor service again.
