Is it really the president’s choice? In my opinion they should decide such things by a vote of the state residents. After all, it won’t affect Obama, who doesn’t live there.
Actually, according to a law passed by congress, these choices are made by the Secretary of the Interior. So the idea that Obama did “an end run” around congress, like Senator Portman accused him of, is just another example of conservatives in government who are ignorant of how the American government operates. It’s not as dangerous as Tom Cotton’s attacks on the idea that America should have a foreign policy, but it’s just as ridiculous.
